For my action research topic in EDUC 7741 I am considering: what factors play positive and negative roles in the psychological development of English Language Learners (ELLs)? I would like to use a similar model to the biopsychosocial (BPS) model to help develop questions and to seek their answers. To the BPS model I would add the fourth component of spirituality. So the four “quadrants” of my model would be biology, psychological, social, and spiritual. My model could be the biopsychosocial +1 model.

Questions might include:

  • What is the age of the ELL?
  • Does the ELL have any physical disabilities that they have had to overcome?
  • Does the ELL have any learning disabilities?
  • Has the ELL had no or low schooling?
  • What socioeconomic environment has the ELL lived in?
  • What is the cultural background of the ELL?
  • What type of belief system does the ELL have?
  • What beliefs have been imposed on the ELL by parents, etc.?
